No choice, fates made fait accompli
I’m not even considered an accomplice, honest
Tasks asked of me ain’t accomplished easily
Like slaying demons with broken swords
Kippers cutting down the forest’s biggest tree
By order of Knights Who Say Ni!
Lands divers have I toured
Seen from shipside’s fish with illuming lures
Enduring from lurid foreheads
Swimming alongside pearl-birthed mermaids
In water pure as Christ’s actions pre and post Passion.
As one seer-seen seastorm abated
We beheld an area of water strangely elevated, in ways Law forbade
None aboard, sealord saltdogs all, had seen such before
Awe then among the men, watching from the rail peril-sensing
As a sizeable portion of berylline water formed a definite cube
Browngreynavy sprayful playful.
Water
Murderously strong innocent retarded child, wake of sprained pets
With fouled strides, howling out to alert some other in vast night
No man aboard was ever slandered coward
Shivering now like naked, crystalled winter flowers
Livery holding the contents of their bowels.
The sea cube enchanted, nothing like it had we encountered
Though we had sailed successfully where greater men floundered
Places beyond counting, beyond accounting, youthful fountained
Full of high amazing strangeness, but for this case
Nothing heretofore embraced braced us
We were made crazy
The sane remade insane, themselves maiming
Seething, moving as water moves
Only as a solid cube, of permanent and fixed shape
Creature of movable feature and flat facet
Something harpoon fails to vanquish.
Hideous maven strangeling leant shape
From another dimensional plain
Arrived with nothing to impart or impact, killing for dull sensation
Registering nothing like pain or delight, no delay invoking its might
An arm invited horribly from that cube, unfurling shockingly
Throbbing, size increasing with each pulsation, an hideous warp spasm
Crawled from vast chasms in charnel lanes of outmost space
Last of a profane race of high ancients, fathers to angels.
Manyfaced this cube devoid of human facet consumed the crew
Chewed perhaps, what happened them water occluded, commuted
Perhaps to universes further than spell-loving Jupiter
Polluted by fumes dangerous to humans
Racked by war whose end is ne’er due.
I was let live, to write of it
I will consign my experience to the ship’s log, for the next to read
I will slit my guts and breach the sea, for sharks to eat.
